Revisiting Cubism
Capturing a mental image into a static image is a hard challenge. When I remember something, I am not seeing a single perspective. It is a combination of different times, different settings and therefore different perspectives. This seems impossible to capture in a static image, there needs to be some kind of transformation to make this happen. Already in 1907, they experiment with a way of doing this, Cubism. Although it only latest for around 7 years it had a great influence on the way how we can perceive are surrounding.
I wanted to revisit this, first by just looking at my desk at the academy. How can I picture this desk from different views at the same time? From above, underneath, left and right at the same time. It was fun to make and it challenged me to look at something in a completely different way. But this was my desk, something I could see in real life. But what hap- pens when I revisit my own memory, and apply the rules I learned from Cubism?
Welcome to Egypt, a painting where I revisited my memory of Egypt.
I see it a bit like a photo album, but instead of all the pictures being divided into separate pages, in this work, all the “photos” are merged into each other. Using transparency, different proportions and of course different perspectives I gave shape to the memory of Egypt.
In my most recent work, a 300x200 cm painting I combined it all. Both the movement of Michael, the transparency of Welcome to Egypt, and the thoughts of Cubism. A painting that captures the essence of a memo- ry transformed into an image.
